Alaska Jewish Museum Fall 2020 Newsletter

Greetings Members!

Here’s hoping this update finds you well during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Our prayers go out to those who have lost loved ones due to the pandemic. We wish healing and hope to those who are ill as well as to those who are dealing with the resulting financial strain. Our first member newsletter was written on March 1, 2020 - just before the virus exploded world-wide. The past five months have been devoted keeping abreast of the facts, staying in touch with friends and family and following health and safety guidelines.

The Alaska Jewish Museum is now receiving vistors in a limited way – by appointment only. We have on our website a COVID-19 reservation form you can fill out and submit online. You can also call the museum to arrange a visit over the phone.

Museum Curator Leslie Fried is happy to be back on the job after an initial lay-off of almost two months. Efforts since then have focused upon writing grants for both payroll protection and COVID-19 mitigation expenses. We have also installed out new HVAC system and UV lights for a safer and healthier environment.

Not only has Curator Leslie Fried continued her work on the Alaska Jewish Oral Histories Kiosk Project for which she traveled to towns around the state interviewing some of Alaska’s Jewish citizens, but she has begun also begun filming for an online program called “Conversations with the Curator,” a series of talks with some of the people featured in our museum exhibit Eight Alaskas Tell Their Stories. We will keep you posted when it debuts on the website.

Once again, the Alaska Jewish Museum will be sponsoring a film at the Anchorage International Film Festival which this year will be virtual. Stay tuned for the announcement of which film it will be. Hint: It is a German film by an Israeli-German filmmaker, and it involves lots of music!

Finally, we here at the Museum hope to see you soon. Please stay safe!
